The Homer Laughlin China Company Hosts IUP Hospitality Management Students at NRA

Next Generation of Food Professionals Garner Tradeshow Experience

Newell, WV — HLC Inc.’s Homer Laughlin China Company has partnered for a second year with Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s (IUP) Department of Hospitality Management to host a group of lucky IUP students at this year’s National Restaurant Association (NRA) show in Chicago.

This is the second time the two entities have partnered to introduce students to the tradeshow experience. Both Homer Laughlin and IUP benefit from tapping into the younger vibe, hearing which ideas and concepts resonate with younger professionals who will soon be entering the hospitality workforce full time. In turn, IUP’s students gather valuable experience through exposure to one of the industry’s biggest trade shows.

IUP professor Dr. Stephen Shiring will lead the group to HLC’s tradeshow booth, which will serve as home base for the students during their experience. Students are encouraged to walk the floor, take notes of their impressions, and to report back on their observations.

At the show, they will observe which booths are successfully driving foot traffic, which demonstrations best capture attention, and which booth concepts and ideas are the most eye-catching to the more than 63,000 foodservice professionals who attend NRA each year. This event offers important networking experience and demonstrates that there are hundreds of careers from which to choose in foodservice, encouraging students to set their sights high and to examine varied paths.

“This partnership was a great success last year, so repeating it was a no-brainer,” said Dan Williams, foodservice and general marketing manager for HLC Inc. “I think the students gained some very valuable experience, and we’re happy to act as their event hosts with our booth as a home base. In turn, we benefit from their unique voice as emerging professionals and can learn what works and what doesn’t work, both in the tradeshow environment and, demographically, as a market segment.”

IUP students receive class credit for attending the show, and last year’s crop came away inspired and motivated for the future. Homer Laughlin is happy to be participating in this exciting endeavor for a second year.
