Custom Dinnerware Award Goes to Central Marketing

Jose Pepper’s dinnerware inspired by intricate tile work wins Parry Award

Newell, WV—The Homer Laughlin China Company announced the winner of its Jonathan O. Parry Design Award, recognizing Central Marketing Associates (CMA) of Kansas City, Kan. CMA was instrumental in bridging the gap between Homer Laughlin’s dedicated design department and CMA’s customer, Jose Pepper’s, a Kansas-based chain of Tex-Mex restaurants. Their new Talavera tile-inspired plates — with bold colors and an intricate, complex pattern — won over the judges.

The annual award honors the year’s best custom dinnerware project as judged by a panel of china design and graphic design professionals.

In what has become a tradition, on the eve of the annual National Restaurant Association (NRA) Show, The Homer Laughlin and Hall China companies host an event for their sales reps. During that show, the Jonathan O. Parry Design Award is bestowed on the year’s best custom dinnerware project. The award’s namesake, Jonathan O. Parry, was an HLC art director who passed away in 2000. The award is given each year to honor Jonathan’s creativity, vision, and love for the industry.

The rim of the Jose Pepper’s plate mimics the intricate repeating patterns found on Mexican Talavera tiles, with a slightly offset grid layout to replicate the imperfect look of tiles placed by hand. Cobalt blue coloring accented by yellow flourishes evokes the feeling of a warm and welcoming cocina in a village casa. Talavera tile is named after Talavera de la Reina, the Spanish village famed for creating the pottery from which the tile is derived.

Steve Belgeri founded CMA in 1999 after four decades of work in the foodservice industry, building both his sales experience and maturing relationships with distributors and end users. The manufacturers’ representative firm covers Kansas and Southern Missouri and supports sales in Iowa and St. Louis.

Jose Pepper’s has been serving its unique blend of Tex-Mex cuisine for nearly 30 years, growing to more than a dozen locations in Kansas and Missouri.
